What the What?! is my place for random academic (and not so academic) musings on popular culture, celebrity, television, food, and anything else that strikes my fancy.  I consider it an alternate space for my academic writing as well as a place to get my thoughts out as part of the process of academic writing.

I, Erin A. Meyers, earned my Ph.D. in Communication Communication Department at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2010. She holds a Master’s degree in Women’s Studies from The Ohio State University. My dissertation, titled “Gossip Talk and Online Community: Celebrity Gossip Blogs and their Audiences” examines the role of gossip in celebrity culture and how new media forms of gossip, specifically gossip blogs, have reconfigured the production, circulation, and consumption of celebrity culture in contemporary American culture. I also explore how online gossip about celebrities works (and does not work) as a site of social meaning-making and community-building. I’ve published on celebrity and new media in several venues. See my CV for a full listing of my publications and presentations.

I study, write, and teach on a range of popular culture topics, including celebrity and stardom, film and television, and, more recently, new media and convergence culture. I am currently a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow at Northeastern University in the Department of Communication Studies. At NU, I teach Introduction to Communication Studies, Public Speaking and Advertising and Promotional Culture. See my full CV here.

In my “free” time, I like to cook, eat and generally talk about food. I also enjoy hiking, spending time with my husband, Mike, and sampling his homebrew beers. You can read about his exploits in beer and beyond on his blog The Mossy Skull .

Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, gossip about celebrities
I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with more information? It is extremely helpful for me.
